CENTRAL Coast Council has prepared for the return of the migratory seabirds at Karagi Point, The Entrance North, one of the most successful Little Tern breeding sites in NSW. Works have included sand preparation, protective fencing and shelter installation to help keep eggs and chicks safe from disturbance and predators during the breeding season.

Central Coast Mayor, John McNamara said the annual return of the Little Terns highlights the importance of protecting the region's unique coastline and the wildlife that depends on it.

"Every year these remarkable Little Terns travel thousands of kilometres to return to The Entrance North, and we're proud to play a part in helping protect one of their most important breeding sites in NSW," Mayor McNamara said.

Council is asking residents and visitors to stay outside fenced areas, keep a safe distance from birds, dispose of rubbish responsibly and observe all beach signage.

Council will continue to monitor the site throughout the breeding season and work with state agencies, wildlife experts and volunteers to protect the colony and support breeding success.

With avian influenza (bird flu) among the factors that can impact seabird populations, Council is reminding the community not to touch sick, injured or dead birds and to follow NSW Government advice.

If you observe a bird showing signs of illness, take a photo if safe to do so, note the location and report it immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
