Post Office payments service axed

Central Coast Labor MPs are disheartened that attempts to have payments of rates and water accounts retained at Post Offices across the Central Coast have again been voted down by Liberal and Team Central Coast Councillors at Council’s most recent meeting on 22 September.

A RESCISSION Motion by Labor Councillor Margot Castles to have Council reverse its decision and look at options to have the Service returned was met with little sympathy from Liberal and Team Central Coast Councillors, who chose ego over ethos.

Minister for the Central Coast and Member for Wyong, David Harris said, “The Liberal and Team Central Coast block has yet again used its weight of numbers on Council to bring about a disappointing and short-sighted outcome that goes against the expressed will of ratepayers.

“Many people on the Coast rely on the convenience of their local post office as the place to pay their rates and water bills and this decision has taken away this essential service from them.

“The decision also completely disregards the more than 3,000 ratepayers who put their name to the petition.”

Member for Swansea, Yasmin Catley said that the Central Coast Council has actively decided to make life harder for people, particularly older residents who have paid their bills at the post office for years.

“Over the past few months, I have door-knocked and petitioned across our local area. The community is not asking for much. They just want to keep paying their rates and water bills the way they always have," she said.

“More than 3,000 people asked Council to reconsider. They deserved to be listened to.”

Rather than considering the real negative effects this service cut would have on ratepayers, including the elderly who they represent, the Liberal and Team Central Coast Councillors ignored the petition of signatures in excess of 3,000 and continued on their rampage to cut this service to the community.

This now means that from 29 September, residents will be left with reduced and restrictive options about where they can pay their rates and water accounts. Australia Post will no longer be an option.

David Mehan, Member for The Entrance, was angry over how Liberal and Team Central Coast Councillors had let ratepayers down, prioritising cuts over community.

“By ignoring over 3000 ratepayer signatures, they have clearly shown where their interests lie," Mr Mehan said.

“The Central Coast community deserves better and the Councillors who voted down the Rescission to explore options, need to take a long hard look at themselves and ask, whose interests am I elected to represent.”

Member for Gosford, Liesl Tesch said almost 12,000 rate payers rely on this service. "It’s astonishing to see the Liberal and Team Central Coast councillors teaming up to cut services from the most vulnerable in our community.

“The alternatives offered do not come close to replacing the accessibility Australia Post offered. By axing this vital service, they have shown who they really care about – and it’s not our community.

“It is clear that only Labor will deliver for those on the Central Coast.”

Central Coast Labor MPs will now consider looking at other options available, given Council, who cut the service whilst masking it as a budget saving measure, was not able to deliver to its ratepayers.
