MEMBER for Wyong, David Harris, acknowledged the NSW Government Community Service Award recipient Elvin Chan from Meals on Wheels Central Coast - presenting him with his award.
Elvin has been an integral part of Meals on Wheels Central Coast (MOWCC) for the past four years, beginning his journey during the COVID-19 pandemic as a Meal Delivery volunteer. His unwavering commitment ensured that vulnerable members of the community continued to receive essential meals and support during a time of great uncertainty.
"His involvement not only provided essential meals to those in need but also exemplified the resilience and compassion that communities can foster in challenging times," Mr Harris said.
"In response to the challenges posed by COVID-19, Meals on Wheels launched a new program to assist clients with online grocery shopping, ensuring they still had access to essential supplies while maintaining safety and social distancing measures.
"Mr Chan would collect the orders from the grocery store and deliver each order to the clients, not only as a service but a welfare check and socialisation for our isolated clients."
Beyond his regular meal deliveries, Elvin is known for his “can do” attitude and always going the extra mile – quite literally. Whether he is doubling back to assist a client in need, stepping in at short notice to cover shifts, or helping to pack and distribute gifts on special occasions, his generosity and kindness leave a lasting impact on both clients and fellow MOWCC volunteers.
"His commitment shines through not only in his reliable delivery schedule but also in the warmth he brings with each interaction, creating a positive experience for everyone he serves," Mr Harris said.
"He has been known to "double back" to clients if he receives a call from the office to collect something from a client that is required, come in on an unscheduled day to fill in the gap if another volunteer is unable to fulfil their shift on short notice, and he assists with packing gifts for clients to distribute on special days."
Reflecting on his award, Elvin shared, "It was a lovely surprise to be awarded, and I’m very thankful. The award belongs to all MOWCC staff and volunteers – it’s great teamwork. It makes me happy when I deliver meals to the clients who are sometimes waiting for me. Seeing their smiles and knowing I’ve made a difference makes me happy.”
Lyn Ferris, Client Services Officer at the Tuggerah Outlet, describes Elvin as “a humble and gracious volunteer who is always generous with his time.”
Amy Baulman, Volunteer and Program Coordinator, added, “A huge congratulations, Elvin. You are always willing to lend a helping hand. This award is so well deserved, and we are beyond grateful for your kindness and dedication.”
Mr Harris said, “Elvin’s goes above and beyond dedicating his time to volunteering. His unwavering support for his clients, volunteers and staff is phenomenal.”
His involvement not only provided essential meals to those in need but also exemplified the resilience and compassion that communities can foster in challenging times. Elvin’s commitment shines through not only in his reliable delivery schedule but also in the warmth he brings with each interaction, creating a positive experience.
The Meals on Wheels Central Coast team is incredibly grateful to Elvin and all MOWCC volunteers for their continued support in making a difference in the community.
